Basnet: From Reporter to Media Leader in Nepal

Known as an eloquent speaker from an early age, Manoj Basnet always excelled in extracurricular activities during his school years. He never hesitated to help his friends and was well-liked by his teachers. Hailing from Panauti, Municipal Ward No. 8, he began his education at Bhaleshwor High School in his hometown before continuing at Tejganga Campus and Indreshwor Campus. From his school days, he took the lead in various activities and maintained that leadership throughout college. His strong academic performance and clear communication skills earned him the nickname “Leader” among his peers.

From school to college, everyone regarded him as a leader. This label encouraged him to progress in his career, inspiring him to always strive for innovation. Born in 1987 in Palpaliga village, Kavrepalanchok district, Panauti-8, Malpi, he joined Nepal’s largest and most reputable media company, Kantipur Publications, in 2007. He began his career as a Kavre reporter for Kantipur National Daily. During this time, he established a unique identity in the district, excelling in investigative journalism.

He reported news up to five or six times a day, and most of his stories were published in the newspaper. “When the news I reported and sent was published, it motivated me to improve my reporting,” he said. He added, “I feel fulfilled when my hard work and evidence-based reporting gain national attention and attract interest from state agencies.”

Throughout his career, Basnet credits media and air industrialist Captain RameshworThapa for providing him with opportunities in the media industry. “He is the one who gave me the chance to work in this field, after working as a reporter for a few years, he brought me into media management” Basnet told.Thapa is currently the Chairman of Annapurna Media Network, while Basnet serves as the General Manager.

After his time as a reporter at Kantipur Daily, Basnet transitioned into media management as the western regional head of Annapurna Post Daily, a position established by Thapa. This opportunity marked his entry into media management.

Before his tenure at Annapurna Media Network as General Manager, Mr. Basnet held several significant roles at Kantipur Publications from March 2019 to June 2024, where he excelled as the Head of Circulation, Press and Regional Offices. His contributions during this period significantly enhanced circulation and revenue streams, earning him prestigious accolades such as the RastriyaKhanpaniPatrakaritaPuraskar and the Chairman’s Excellence Award, which reflect his unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation in media management.

Prior to his work at Kantipur Publications, Mr. Manoj Basnet amassed extensive experience at Annapurna Media Network over six years and seven months, from September 2014 to March 2019, where he honed his expertise in sales and distribution across various roles. As the Head of the Sales and Distribution Department from September 2016 to March 2019, he was responsible for the comprehensive sales and distribution of all products under Nepal News Network International Pvt Ltd, including the Annapurna Post and The Annapurna Express. In this capacity, he developed and implemented effective sales strategies, managed union-related issues, and demonstrated strong people management skills. Prior to this, he served as Regional Coordinator from December 2015 to September 2016, overseeing operations across seven states in Nepal, driving company development activities, securing advertisements, and fostering relationships with local communities. Additionally, during his tenure in the Business Bureau/Corporate role from December 2014 to December 2015, he managed overall business, corporate, and brand activities, further solidifying his proficiency in strategic planning and brand management. Mr. Basnet began his journey at Annapurna Media Network as Bureau Chief from September 2014 to December 2014, and his exemplary performance was recognized with the Best Performer of the Year award for 2016-2017.

In addition, Mr. Basnet has had a distinguished career in sales and business development across multiple sectors. As a Sales Consultant for Himalayan Essence Pvt. Ltd. from March 2023 to July 2024, he successfully devised and implemented innovative sales strategies for its portfolio companies, including Vedanta and Safe Home. Founded in Nepal, the Youth’s UNESCO Club has a decade-long history of advocating for youth development and leadership, earning the trust of over six thousand followers worldwide. The club has successfully hosted numerous national and international conferences, including the UNESCO Youth Looking Beyond Disaster Ambassador (2012), UNESCO Youth Peace Camp (2013), and the Olympic Truce Forum (2014). In April 2024, Mr. Basnet was honored with the title of UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassador during the 18th Youth Peace Ambassador Training Workshop held in Los Angeles. This recognition underscores his dedicated efforts to promote peace and empower youth through effective media platforms.

Mr. Basnet has received recognition from several esteemed organizations for his exemplary service and contributions to society. Notably, he has been acknowledged by the Girija Prasad Koirala Foundation America Chapter and the New York State Assembly (under the auspices of Assembly Member Steven B. Raga), both of which provided recommendations and citations in April and May 2024, respectively. Additionally, Mr. Basnet was honored by the Canadian Multicultural Council – Asians in Ontario, which commended him for his outstanding work in the media on April 2024.

Furthermore, Mr. Basnet has been recognized by the prestigious Canadian Multicultural Council, which provided him with a formal recommendation in April 2024 for his exemplary service and significant contributions to society through his work in the media. Earlier in his career, Mr. Basnet received the Corona Yodya Service Award in September 2020 for his outstanding service during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting his dedication to public health and community support during a critical time. In January 2019, he was bestowed with the Chairman’s Excellence Award from Kantipur Media Group, celebrating his exceptional contributions to journalism and media—a testament to his professionalism and commitment to ethical reporting. In addition, Mr. Basnet is International press card- member of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) since September 2022, which enhances his credibility within the global journalism community. His role as International Media Advisor for the Youth UNESCO Club, USA, since August 2022, allows him to contribute significantly to initiatives aimed at promoting education and fostering cultural understanding through media.

Furthermore, he serves as a Member of the International Relations Department of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) since February 2022, where he works to strengthen connections and facilitate collaboration among journalists. Mr. Basnet’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian efforts is exemplified by his Membership in the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) since December 2011. Additionally, he has been appointed as Philippines Association of Extension Program Implementers, Inc. (PAEPI) – Global Media Coordinator in Nepal for 2024 – 2026. The PAEPI focusing empowering communities through sustainable development.
