Delhi. Donald Trump did say the sentence “I don’t want to destroy his political career,” but the context is not what is being claimed on social media.
The Real Context of the Statement
This statement came during October 2025 (and more recently during the February 2026 trade deal discussions). Trump was speaking about the issue of India purchasing oil from Russia. He claimed that:
PM Modi had promised him that India would not buy oil from Russia.
Trump further said that Modi is his very good friend and that he did not want him (Modi) to get into any difficulty in front of his people or have his career ruined.
The clear meaning was that Trump wanted to show that, because of his friendship with Modi, he did not want to put too much pressure on him — not that he had some secret file with which he could end his career.
The Claim of a ‘Secret File’ and Questions in social media posts like What file is it? have been added purely to create sensationalism.
Neither Trump nor any official American source has ever mentioned any such file. The references to it that Congress IT cell people are making on their social media are completely baseless.
Trump often uses exaggeration and dramatic flair in his statements, and this remark was part of that same style.
The Indian Government’s Response
When Trump first made this statement, news reports citing the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and sources stated that India’s energy policy is based on national interests. Additionally, very recently (in February 2026), a trade agreement was reached between the two countries in which tariffs were reduced.
Both leaders have described each other as solid friends, which completely rejects any claims of enmity or a file.
The claim by several Congress-affiliated websites and social media accounts — that Trump has some file capable of destroying Modi — is entirely unfounded.
Trump’s statement was part of his typical bragging style, in which he tried to portray himself as a generous leader by referencing their friendship.
Reviving it and making it viral these days seems to be nothing more than Congress propaganda that goes beyond the facts.
