New York : In the wake of recent unrest in Bangladesh, reports of unprecedented, brutal attacks targeting the Hindu minority have resurfaced, raising fears of a repeat of the 1971 genocide, which claimed 2.8 million lives and saw at least 200,000 predominantly Hindu women raped, according to U.S. Congress Resolution HR 1430 (2022). The genocide has had lasting effects, with the Hindu population in Bangladesh plummeting from 20% in 1971 to just 8.9% today. Current violence has not only resulted in attacks but also reports of systematic impoverishment, with some accounts claiming that 2 million Hindus have been forced to resign from their jobs, and properties belonging to Hindus have been systematically targeted.
In light of the ongoing United Nations Plenary Session, where Bangladesh’s interim president Muhammad Yunus is in attendance, a large-scale airline banner will be flown across the Hudson River and around the Statue of Liberty on Friday, September 27th, at 1 PM EST. This banner aims to raise global awareness of the current violence in Bangladesh and the looming threat of another genocide.
Three designated viewing spots have been identified for those wishing to witness the banner:
1) New York City: In front of the Museum of Jewish Heritage at Battery Park
2) New Jersey: At the New York Skyline Vista Point in Liberty State Park
3) Statue of Liberty: The banner will also be visible from various points along both sides of the Hudson River.
The event will also be live-streamed on https://StopHinduGenocide.org for wider global reach. Those in NYC taking pictures and videos are requested to post on X tagging @StopHinduGenocide, #StopHinduGenocide and #BangladeshiHindus and stream live on their Facebook and Instagram pages and YouTube channels.
