दूध का दूध और ….

सुबह घूमने के लिए निकला तो श्रीमती जी ने एक काम टिपा दिया ” घर में दूध खत्म हो गया है , आते समय मिल्क पार्लर से लेते आना ।”

श्रीमती जी के आदेश का पालन करने मिल्क पार्लर गए और काउंटर पर बैठे सज्जन से कहा ” दो पैकेट दूध देना ”

” कौन सा ?” वहां से प्रश्न आया।

ये प्रश्न मेरे लिए अजीब था।

” कौन सा मतलब ?”

” मतलब ये सर, कि आपको फुल क्रीम चाहिए, या हॉफ क्रीम चाहिए। टोंड चाहिए या डबल टोंड । फैट फ्री चाहिए या हॉफ फैट। “काउंटर से जवाब आया।

” भाई मुझे दूध चाहिए आइसक्रीम नहीं । ” मैने समझाना चाहा।कुछ दिन पहले ही आइसक्रीम का एक विज्ञापन याद आ गया जिसमें इस तरह की किस्मों का जिक्र था।

” सर ये दूध की ही किस्में बता रहा हूं। ”

हार कर श्रीमती जी को फोन लगाना पड़ा और उनसे सही जानकारी लेनी पड़ी ।साथ में अपनी कार्यक्षमता का प्रमाण पत्र भी मिला ” तुमसे तो एक काम ढंग से नहीं होता” , तब जाकर वो दूध जिससे चाय बन सके लेकर मैं घर की ओर लौटा।

रास्ते में सोचने लगा कि अपन क्या इतने पुराने हो गए है कि पता ही न हो कि दूध कितने प्रकार का होता है। बचपन में तो हमें दूध का एक ही प्रकार मालूम था और वह था ” धन्सू का दूध।” धन्सू हमारी कॉलोनी का दूध वाला था। वहीं हमारी पूरी कॉलोनी को दूध देता था। शुरू शुरू में वो साइकिल पर आता , कुछ दिनों बाद वो जावा मोटरसाइकिल पर आने लगा। बचपन में हमे लगता कि ये जावा मोटरसाइकिल दूध वालों के लिए ही बनाई गई है। फुट रेस्ट से टिका कर दो बड़े केन और पीछे की सीट से टिका कर दो छोटे और दो बड़े केन।

धन्सू की एक खासियत थी कि जब चाहो जितना चाहो उससे दूध ले लो। कभी मना नहीं करता था। बर्तन में पहले आधा आधा लीटर नाप कर दो लीटर और उसके ऊपर थोड़ा और ” लटकन” के रूप में डालना ये दिनचर्या रहती। साथ में एक एल्युमिनियम की बड़ी केन और होती जिसमें छाछ होता । छाछ आपको जितना चाहिए उतना मिलता था बिना किसी मूल्य के ।प्राप्त जानकारी के अनुसार हमारे यहां भैंस का दूध आता था जो बड़ी केन में आता था। बड़ी कैन के साथ एक छोटी कैन भी रहती थी । पूछने पर घंन्सू ने बताया कि इसमें गाय का दूध है जो पड़ोस वाले खरे जी के लिए है। इस गाय के दूध का रहस्य भी एक दिन खुला। धन्सू ने रामचरण जी से पानी मांगा। रामचरण एक ग्लास पानी ले आए पीने के लिए। ग्लास देखकर धन्सू बोला ” जा में का होत, लोटा भर के ले आओ। ” रामचरण जी गुस्से में बड़ा जग भर कर पानी ले आए। फिर धन्सू ने बड़े केन में से आधा लीटर दूध छोटे कैन में डाला और उसके साथ पूरा जग पानी छोटे केन में उंडेल दिया। हो गया गाय का दूध तैयार। फिर खिसिया कर बोला ” आज भूल गए घर ले लाबे की सो इतई बना रहे”।

वैसे भी धन्सू लाज शरम मान अपमान से परे एक स्थितप्रज्ञ व्यक्ति था। दूध पतला होने की शिकायत हर पंद्रह दिन में करना हमारा परम कर्तव्य होता था और उसका काल संगत उत्तर देना धन्सू का। कभी भैंसिया चारा ज्यादा खा गई तो कभी भैंसिया पानी ज्यादा पी गई। कभी कभी तो एकदम बेशर्मी से ” लल्ला ने दूध बगरा दव सो तनिक पानी मिलाने पड़ो।” “तनिक” शब्द पर हमें आश्चर्य होता।कहने का मन होता ” तनिक” दूध भी मिला लिया करो। लेकिन धन्सू के चेहरे पर कोई शिकन नहीं आती। वह अपनी मुस्कुराहट के साथ सारी बातें सुन लेता।

हमारी कॉलोनी शहर से थोड़ी बाहर की तरफ थी । मेन रोड पर आने के लिए नाके से गुजरना होता था। नाके पर मुसाफिरों की सुविधा के लिए नल लगे थे और मवेशियों के पीने के लिए पानी का हौद बना था। एक दिन पिताजी के साथ जा रहा था तो देखा धन्सू केन नल से लगाए खड़ा है। पिताजी से सामान्य अभिवादन की दृष्टि से कहा ” क्यों धन्सू सब ठीक। ” तो उसने उलट कर उत्तर दिया ” आपके यहां दूध दे आए हैं साहब । ” यानि अब आपको कोई मतलब नहीं होना चाहिए कि मैं दूध में और कितना पानी मिलाऊं।धन्सू की एक आदत बहुत अच्छी थी कितना भी कुछ बोलो , डांटो फटकारो वह हमेशा मुस्कुराता रहता। लेकिन यह भी सुनिश्चित करता कि कॉलोनी में और कोई दूसरा दूध वाला न आने पाए। एक दिन दूध देने नहीं आया तो अगले दिन मां ने कारण पूछा। बिल्कुल सहज भाव से उसने उत्तर दिया ” काल पेशी हती कोर्ट में। वो तीन साल पीछे मर्डर हो गओ हतो ताई लाने पेशी हती।” अब इसके बाद किसकी हिम्मत थी दूध वाला बदलने की।

छतरपुर से भोपाल आए तो दूधवाला सिस्टम खत्म करके डेयरी सिस्टम पर आ गए। डेयरी में भी बोतल सिस्टम समाप्त होकर पैकेट सिस्टम पर आ गया था। एक नीला पैकेट और एक लाल पैकेट। जब ये पैकेट नए नए आए थे तो ये पैकेट इतने आकर्षक लगते थे कि लोग इन्हें सम्हाल कर इनके नए नए प्रयोग इजाद करते थे। सब्जी लाने की थैली, डायनिंग टेबल का कवर , स्कूटर का कवर , साइकिल सीट का कवर, गैलरी का पर्दा आदि आदि। हमसे तीन घर छोड़ कर रहने वाले मोहन चाचा ने तो सुना है चाची को उन थैलियों से रात में पहनने का गाउन बनाने का आदेश दे दिया था। वैसे भी मोहन चाचा अपनी अद्वितीय प्रयोग धार्मिता के लिए जाने जाते थे। बालों में हेयर डाई लगा कर पूरे मार्केट में घूम कर आने का साहसिक कार्य उन्होंने ही प्रारंभ किया था। उनकी प्रयोग धार्मिता की पराकाष्ठा तो ये थी कि वे ” सिर्फ” खादी भंडार से खरीदा गाउन पहन कर दूध लेने जाते थे। ” सिर्फ” शब्द के रहस्य पर से पर्दा तब उठा जब एक दिन सुबह के समय जोर की हवा चली और मोहन चाचा जो उस समय दूध लेने डेयरी पर खड़े थे , का गाउन पूरा हवा में उड़ने लगा। मोहन चाचा डॉन फिल्म( पुरानी अमिताभ वाली ) की हेलन की तरह नजर आने लगे । हेलन ने तो तब भी कुछ कपड़े पहने थे लेकिन हमारे मोहन चाचा शब्द और कृति से ” सिर्फ” शब्द को सार्थक करते नजर आए।

जैसे जैसे चाय में दूध कम होता गया , दूध कहां से आ रहा है और कैसे आ रहा है इसमें हमारी दिलचस्पी कम होती गई। लेकिन अब तो हद ही हो गई कि दूध की इतनी किस्में हो गई और हमें पता ही नहीं चला।

किस्में कितनी भी हों धन्सू के दूध की बराबरी नहीं कर पाएंगी। क्योंकि धन्सू का दूध सिर्फ दूध नहीं था। भाई हॉस्टल से आता तो उसके लिए अलग दूध बिना कहे ले आता , साथ में जुमला जोड़ देता ” उते पतो नई कैसो दूध मिलत”। मेहमान आते तो बिना कहे दूध बढ़ा देता। हिसाब जो दो , जितना दो ले लेता।

एक बार दीदी की तबियत ठीक न होने से पिताजी उन्हें आराम के लिए ताऊजी के घर से लिवा लाए। दीदी का दो साल का बेटा भी था। घर में दूध ज्यादा आने लगा। लेकिन जैसे ही धन्सू ने छोटे बच्चे को घर में देखा रोज एक छोटी से बरनी में अलग से दूध लाने लगा। कहता ” जे हमारे कान्हा जी के लिए। ”

लगभग महीना भर रहकर दीदी वापिस ग्वालियर चली गई। अगले महीने जब मां ने धन्सू को हिसाब के पैसे दिए तो धन्सू बोला ” जे कितने पैसा दे रई अम्मा। ” मां ने हिसाब बताया। उसमें उस छोटी बरनी के भी पैसे जुड़े थे जो वो रोज़ अलग से लाता था। धन्सू एकदम बिफर गया । ” जे कैसो पाप करवा रही अम्मा हमसे। हम कान्हा जी के दूध पैसे कैसे ले सकत। हम एसो पाप नई कर सकत। ” कहते कहते धन्सू की आंखों में आंसू आ गए थे। मां की भी आंखे भीग आई थी। पता नहीं अंततः मां ने धन्सू को कितने पैसे दिए । लेकिन इतना तय था कि लाख मनाने पर भी धन्सू ने अतिरिक्त दूध के पैसे नहीं लिए।

आज टोंड , डबल टोंड, क्रीम , हॉफ क्रीम , फुल क्रीम दूध के कई प्रकार है लेकिन किसी में भी वो स्वाद नहीं है , वो पौष्टिकता नहीं है जो धन्सू के दूध में थी क्योंकि धन्सू का दूध सिर्फ दूध नहीं था । उसमें खाने की मलाई शायद उतनी मोटी न जमती हो लेकिन ममता की मलाई बहुत मोटी थी और उसका आज भी कोई मुकाबला नहीं है।

Farmers, the backbone of the country, struggled with limited access to fertilizers, a critical input for boosting agricultural productivity. The cooperative sector, responsible for distributing 70% of fertilizers in India at the time, was grappling with supply shortages. This crisis sparked a revolutionary idea: a cooperative dedicated to producing and distributing fertilizers, owned and operated by farmers themselves. Thus, on November 3, 1967, the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) was born—a beacon of hope for millions of Indian farmers.

Key figures in IFFCO’s founding included cooperative leaders and government officials who championed the cause of farmer empowerment. While specific names like Mr. Paul Pothen, IFFCO’s founding managing director, stand out—recognized with the prestigious Padma Shri award for his contributions to India’s agricultural revival—the true driving force was the collective spirit of India’s farming community. The 57 founding member cooperatives laid the foundation for what would become a movement, embodying values of self-help, democracy, equality, and solidarity.

The vision was clear: to ensure a steady supply of high-quality, affordable fertilizers to Indian farmers, thereby enhancing crop yields and securing food self-sufficiency. IFFCO was registered as a multi-unit cooperative society on November 3, 1967, under the Multistate Cooperative Societies Act. Starting with just 57 member cooperatives, IFFCO set out to address the acute fertilizer shortage that plagued Indian agriculture. The cooperative’s early years were marked by ambitious planning and strategic partnerships. With financial and technical assistance from American cooperatives through CFI, IFFCO proposed the establishment of ammonia, urea, and NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) plants, with initial projects slated for Kalol and Kandla in Gujarat.

The Kalol plant, commissioned in 1975, marked IFFCO’s entry into fertilizer production. Built with innovative use of indigenous materials, it set a precedent for self-reliance. The Kandla plant, also commissioned in 1975, followed suit, producing a range of fertilizers including NPK and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP). By 1981, IFFCO expanded its footprint with the commissioning of urea plants at Phulpur and Aonla in Uttar Pradesh, further solidifying its role as a major fertilizer producer.

IFFCO’s production units became the heart of its operations. The cooperative established five major plants across India:

· Kalol, Gujarat: Commissioned in 1975 and expanded in 1997, it produces 1,100 metric tons per day (MTPD) of ammonia and 1,650 MTPD of urea.

· Kandla, Gujarat: Also commissioned in 1975, with expansions in 1981 and 1999, it produces a range of fertilizers, including NPK (520,000 MTPD), DAP (1,200,000 MTPD), and water-soluble fertilizers.

· Phulpur, Uttar Pradesh: Commissioned in 1981 and expanded in 1997, it produces 9.7 lakh metric tons of ammonia and 17 lakh metric tons of urea annually.

· Aonla, Uttar Pradesh: Commissioned in 1988 and expanded in 1996, it produces 1,740 MTPD of ammonia and 1,515 MTPD of urea.

· Paradeep, Odisha: Acquired in 2005, it has a production capacity of 1.3 million tons of urea per year.

These plants, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, achieved remarkable efficiency, with IFFCO recording an overall capacity utilization of 98% for nitrogenous fertilizers and 53% for phosphatic fertilizers in 2008-09. The cooperative’s focus on energy conservation, exemplified by the Aonla plant’s adoption of CO2 recovery technology, set new benchmarks in the industry.

Diversification and Innovation

Despite its successes, IFFCO faced significant challenges that tested its resilience. The fertilizer industry in India is heavily dependent on imported raw materials, such as ammonia, phosphoric acid, and rock phosphate, making it vulnerable to global price fluctuations. Additionally, the overuse of urea, driven by heavy government subsidies, led to imbalanced nutrient application, raising concerns about soil health and sustainability.

IFFCO also faced environmental and social scrutiny. The World Benchmarking Alliance ranked IFFCO 222nd among 350 global food and agriculture companies, highlighting gaps in sustainability strategies, water use reduction, and commitments to prohibit child and forced labor. The cooperative was urged to set clearer targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving social inclusion.

The Urea Scam: A Dark Chapter
One of the most significant challenges in IFFCO’s history was the alleged urea scam that surfaced in 2022. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigated claims that IFFCO’s managing director, Udai Shanker Awasthi, and others were involved in a fertilizer scam involving kickbacks worth Rs 685 crore. The allegations centered on the generation and layering of proceeds of crime through unrelated entities, with some funds allegedly transferred to entities controlled by Awasthi and his associates. The ED attached properties worth Rs 20.96 crore as part of the probe.

The urea scam cast a shadow over IFFCO’s reputation, raising questions about transparency and governance within the cooperative. For an organization built on trust and farmer-centric values, these allegations were a significant blow. However, IFFCO’s leadership maintained that the cooperative’s operations remained unaffected, and its commitment to farmers was unwavering. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and while the scam posed a reputational risk, IFFCO’s vast network and contributions to agriculture helped it weather the storm.

The impact of the scam was mitigated by IFFCO’s strong track record and its proactive measures to address governance concerns. The cooperative continued to focus on innovation and farmer welfare, reinforcing its credibility through tangible achievements like the launch of Nano Urea and other sustainable products.

A 500 ml bottle of Nano Urea, containing 40,000 mg/L of nitrogen, is equivalent to a 45 kg bag of traditional urea, reducing costs and environmental impact while increasing yields by an average of 8%. Tested across 11,000 farmers’ fields for 94 crops, Nano Urea has been hailed as a game-changer for sustainable agriculture.

The Save the Soil Campaign promotes sustainable practices, while IKST provides financial assistance to farmers affected by natural calamities.
