The Rise and Fall of a Political Mafia

In mid 1800s Italian Mafias started entering the American Underworld. By late 1800s they had built control over select cities like New York. To stop bigger mafia wars and bloodletting they started distributing and dividing the crime empire amongst themselves with nobody else doing that business. So bootlegging, prostitution, gambling, and other businesses were divided area wise amongst the mafia families called coscas. When the mafias couldn agree on the peaceful distribution of the crime empire, then gang wars started and gutters in New York were filled with corpses of members of rival gangs killed by each other.

Similarly, is the case of the criminal political empire set up by a good old man in the largest reclaimed city in the world. The criminal political empire comprised of extortion (small and big), land grabbing, illegal construction, commissions in government business, illegal sand mining, illegal quarrying, shares in illegal activities, settlements and enforcements, various labour and other unions, forceful and illegal eviction of legal real estate owners from their rightfully owned and occupied properties using criminal methods, etc across the main city, satellite areas, and some other prominent cities in the state. The crime empire also included docks in the main city. The said criminal political empire was up for division amongst cousins.

The good ol man (Godfather of the Mafiosi Cosca) proposed a deal. Son to exclusively keep the main city. Son and nephew to share the loot from satellite areas. Nephew to exclusively keep all other prominent cities. Nephew didnt like the plan. He wanted the main city also. Godfather rejected the request.

This resulted in creation of two coscas. Now both competing with each other and baying for a larger share in the same markets.

Then enters a NYPD Officer Lt. Joseph Petrosino type politician with perceivably no experience.

Something about Petrosino. Petrosino was an Italian immigrant who joined the NYPD and rose through the ranks and was responsible for dismantling organized crime within the Italian immigrant community. Petrosino’s work significantly reduced Italian mafia crime in New York City.

Now this Petrosino type politician with Orangish flavours started dismantling the criminal political empire of the main branch and cadet branch of the mafiosi cosca with politically deft moves and hamhanded approach. He made them irrelevant and in turn ineffective. Lets call him Orangish Enforcer.

The way Petrosino forced the infamous “Five Families” of competing Italian Mafia Coscas in New York to come together for their own survival, this Orangish Enforcer helped both the competing coscas i.e. the main branch and cadet branch of the same cosca to come together for their survival. The Don of the Cadet Branch of the mafia cosca even thanked the Orangish Enforcer for uniting the cosca. Cousins who fought over sharing the bread were brought together by the Orangish Enforcer.

The Tale of Two Cities : Melting Pots and Broken Dreams

Prof. Dr. Gautam Sen, who taught International Political Economy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, writes:

“Kolkata was once India’s premier financial and commercial capital and remained its nearly preeminent economic hub. It took less than two decades, from the mid-1960s to destroy Kolkata’s economic vibrancy. There were many issues like the impact of partition and refugees that contributed to Kolkata’s decline but it was political militancy and mindless violence that delivered the coup de grace. It has not recovered since and demographic transformation introduced additional hostility to positive economic change, with the Tata Nano issue the defining moment. Ultimately, talent fled Kolkata en masse in the aftermath of politically instigated industrial and economic liquidation.

Mumbai is also at potential crossroads though it enjoys unique and durable features like geographical location, an enormous existing economic footprint, its film industry and prodigious quantities of highly skilled labour. Mumbai also has a deeply embedded work culture that differentiates it from Kolkata, which had an inherited public service employment temperament that militated against entrepreneurism.

The problem for Mumbai will be the loss of its truly pan Indian workforce and failure to live up to its genuine potential. Political and ethnic strife may deprive Mumbai of its highly skilled non Marathi workforce, especially Gujaratis and Marwadis, who have been prominent in its success, as well as others from across India. They may find attractive alternative options to escape crass regionalism. The great city of Mumbai is a melting pot and home to a vibrant and enviable aesthetic cultural identity, with the potential to rival major Asian and global centres in the India that is emerging. To fall behind and become a stagnant backwater because sectarian politics of low intrinsic significance, which appeals to a disgruntled section of voters, would be a huge tragedy for India as a whole.”

भगवान विठ्ठल और संत ज्ञानेश्वर के युवा पीढ़ी के लिए सबक

हाल ही में स्टॅंडर्ड चार्टर्ड बँक के सीईओ बिल विंटर्स ने एक इंटरव्यू में कहा के आज टेक्नॉलॉजी खासकर AI वह सब कुछ कर रही है जो पहले इंसान करते थे, जैसे- कोड लिखना, प्रेजेंटेशन बनाना, डॉक्युमेंट तैयार करना, ऐसे में असली जरूर सॉफ्ट स्किल की है जो मशीन नहीं दे सकती। जैसे – करुणा, संवाद, लीडरशिप और नैतिक विवेक . विंटर्स ने युवाओं को सलाह दी है कि वे केवल तकनीकी योग्यता के पीछे भागने के अलावा करुणा, आलोचनात्मक सोच व जिज्ञासा को अपनी ताकत बनाये। आज कॉर्पोरेट ऐसे लोगो की तलाश मे है जो टीम का मनोबल समझ सके और सही दिशा मे निर्णय ले सके। विश्व की टॉप कंपनियों में से एक डेलाइट की 2024 की रिपोर्ट भी यही कहती है कि सर्वाधिक डिमांड (65%) टीमवर्क, कम्युनिकेशन स्किल (61%), लीडरशिप (56%) है।

विंटर्स ने युवाओं अनेक गुणों को अपने अंदर बढ़ाने के लिए कहा है। इन गुणों को बढ़ाने के लिए कोई एक आधार, उपास्य,आदर्श सामने होना आवश्यक होता है । आदर्श ऐसा हो जो पिछले अनेक वर्षों से असंख्य पीढ़ियों को प्रेरित कर रहा हो और भविष्य में भी अनेक वर्षों तक प्रेरित करता रहेगा।

ऐसा एक उपास्य,आदर्श भगवान श्री कृष्ण का वह रूप जिसे महाराष्ट्र एवं कर्नाटक के आराध्य भगवान विठ्ठल के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।गौरतलब है कि अपने देश के दोनों राज्य समृद्ध राज्यों में से है साथ ही आज करोड़ों युवाओं की महत्वकांक्षाओं को पूरा करने का जरिया भी बने हुए हैं।

महान संत कवि तुकाराम ने अपने एक अभंग में ‘विठोबा’ शब्द का अर्थ बताया है — ‘ज्ञान’ + ‘ठोबा’ अर्थात ‘रूप’; इस प्रकार विठोबा का अर्थ है ‘परम ज्ञान का रूप’ या ‘परम ज्ञान की मूर्ति’। एक मान्यता यह भी है कि ‘वी’ का अर्थ है गरुड़ पक्षी और ‘ठोबा’ का अर्थ है बैठने का स्थान, इसलिए विठोबा का अर्थ होता है ‘गरुड़ पर विराजमान देवता’।

विठोबा भगवान विष्णु का ही रूप हैं, जो ईंट पर पिछले 28 युग से अपने दोनों हाथ कमर पर रख कर खड़े है। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण को श्रीविष्णु का अवतार माना जाता है,जिनका अवतरण द्वापर युग के अंत में, बुधवार (श्रावण वद्य अष्टमी) के दिन हुआ था।
शास्त्रों में एक श्लोक है –

“वि करो विधातय, था करो नीलकंठाय । ला करो लक्ष्मीकांत, विठ्ठलाभिधिनीयमे।।
इसका अर्थ है – ‘वि’ का संबंध विधाता यानी ब्रह्मा से है,‘था’ का नीलकंठ भगवान शिव से,
और ‘ला’ का लक्ष्मीकांत भगवान विष्णु से। अर्थात ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश ये तीनों देवता ‘विठ्ठल’ में समाहित हैं।
संत ज्ञानेश्वर ने भक्ति परंपरा में भगवान विट्ठल को आराध्य के रूप में स्थापित कर मनुष्य के सर्वांगीण उन्नति के लिए उसके भीतर छुपे गुणों का विकास किया।
संत ज्ञानेश्वर ने भगवान श्री कृष्ण के युगानुकूल संदेश भागवत गीता को सरल और सहज भाषा में लोक समाज के बीच पहुंचाने के लिए ’ज्ञानेश्वरी’ के रूप में उसका सरल भाष्य सबके सामने रखा ।

ज्ञानेश्वरी अध्याय 12 में संत ज्ञानेश्वर ने लिखा है – “करुणा हाचि धर्म” – करुणा ही सच्चा धर्म है। इसे विंटर्स ने युवाओं के लिए प्रथम आवश्यक गुण बताया है।
करुणा को आवश्यक माना गया है। ज्ञानेश्वर महाराज कहते हैं कि करुणा से ही मानव को अपना इष्ट मिलता हैं। करुणा एक ऐसा गुण है जो व्यक्ति को नम्र, समझदार और स्नेह करने वाला बनाता है। करुणा से व्यक्ति तथा समाज की बुरी बातें कम होती हैं और अच्छे गुण बढ़ते हैं।करुणा की वजह से हम दूसरों का दुःख समझते हैं और उनकी मदद करने की इच्छा होती है।

करुणा से व्यक्ति में क्षमा करने की क्षमता आती है और वह दूसरों को आसानी से क्षमा कर पाता है।
संत ज्ञानेश्वर द्वारा स्थापित वारकरी संप्रदाय की परंपराओं का पालन कर साधारण परिस्थिति में जन्मे अनेक लोग संत बने है, इसी कड़ी में संत नामदेव का नाम बहुत बड़ा है।
संत नामदेव की एक कथा बड़ी प्रसिद्ध है एक बार वे भोजन की तैयारी कर रहे थे तभी एक कुत्ता उनकी थाली से रोटी लेकर दौड़ पड़ा लेकिन संत नामदेव के मन में करुणा का भाव प्रबल था। वे घी की कटोरी लेकर कुत्ते के पीछे दौड़े और कहने लगे कि प्रभु अभी रोटी पर घी नहीं लगा है, कृपया घी लगवाकर खाइए। यह भाव इसलिए जागा क्योंकि प्रत्येक प्राणी मात्र में उस ईश्वरीय चैतन्य का दर्शन उन्हें होने लगा था यह करुणा के भाव का सर्वोच्च शिखर है।
अध्याय 4 में ज्ञानेश्वर कहते है –

“विवेकेंवीणें ज्ञान, तेथें अज्ञानचि प्रमाण” अर्थात ज्ञान के साथ यदि विवेक (समझ) नहीं है, तो वहाँ अज्ञान ही अधिक प्रभावी हो जाता है।
“विवेकेंवीणें भजन, तेथें अभिमानचि प्रमाण” अर्थात अगर भजन या केवल भाषण विवेक के बिना किया जाए, तो उसमें अहंकार ही ज़्यादा होता है।अगर कर्म विवेक के बिना किया जाए, तो वह बंधन का कारण बनता है।

“विवेके देहबुद्धी जाये, मग स्वरूपचि होये” (अध्याय 5)विवेक के कारण देह (शरीर) यानी मैं की भावना मिटती है और हम अपने वास्तविक स्वरूप को अपनी शक्ति को जान पाते हैं।

“विवेकेचि आपण, आपणपेंचि जाणे” (अध्याय 6)विवेक के माध्यम से ही हम स्वयं को पहचान सकते हैं।
“विवेकेवीण संसार, तोचि केवळ विकार” (अध्याय 8)विवेक के बिना संसार सिर्फ दोषों और विकारों से भरा होता है।
“विवेकेवीणें देह, तोचि केवळ देह” (अध्याय 10) विवेक के बिना शरीर, केवल एक शरीर ही रह जाता है – उसकी कोई सार्थकता शेष नहीं रहती है।
‘अध्याय 12’ के अनुसार, सच्चा लीडर वही होता है जो ईश्वर को पूरी तरह समर्पित होकर अपना काम करता है।
‘अध्याय 18’ के अनुसार, हर व्यक्ति को अपने काम पर ध्यान देना चाहिए और फल की इच्छा किए बिना अपना कर्तव्य निभाना चाहिए।ज्ञानेश्वरी समानता और न्याय पर ज़ोर देती है।
आज के विद्यार्थियों को कोई भी बड़ी योजना बनाते समय SWOT एनालिसिस करना सिखाया जाता है। जिसमें S का अर्थ होता है Strength यानी शक्ति, W – Weakness यानी हमारी कमजोरी O – Opportunity यानी हमारे सामने संभावित अवसर तथा T – Threat यानी मार्ग में आने वाली बाधाएं।
संत ज्ञानेश्वर ने ज्ञानेश्वरी के माध्यम से आत्म निरीक्षण करते हुए आज से 800 वर्ष पूर्व SWOT एनालिसिस कर स्वयं का विकास करने का युगानूकूल मार्ग बताया था।

ज्ञानेश्वर महाराज ने वारकरी संप्रदाय के माध्यम से यह सिद्ध करके भी दिखाया। संत ज्ञानेश्वर महाराज के मार्ग पर चल कर विभिन्न समाज से अत्यंत साधारण पृष्ठभूमि से निकले महापुरुष इसका प्रमाण है।

कुछ प्रमुख संत है तुकाराम महाराज, संत एकनाथ महाराज, संत नामदेव महाराज, संत सेना महाराज(सेन समाज), संत नरहरी महाराज(सोनी समाज),संत गाडगे महाराज(रजक समाज), संत सावता महाराज(माली समाज) संत चोखामेळा महाराज (महार समाज)आदि।

आषाढ़ एकादशी के अवसर पर इन संतों के अलावा अनेक संतों के मूल स्थान से उनकी चरण पादुकाओं को लेकर लाखों की संख्या में भक्त भगवान विट्ठल के दर्शन के लिए पंढरपुर पहुंचते हैं। और भगवान विट्ठल के चरणों में अपनी कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करते हैं।

आज की युवा पीढ़ी को भी अपने शास्त्रों में लिखें कालजयी और युगानुकूल शाश्वत मूल्यों के प्रकाश में भविष्य का मार्ग देख कर अपना और अपने राष्ट्र का भवितव्य गढ़ने की आवश्यकता है।

Ganda Hai Par Dhandha Hai: The Market of Desire

Because there is a demand (not even a latent demand) for this type of product and content. Why abuse a person who is exploiting the market opportunity and making money?

This is how things are working. Leaving morality and immorality aside, we have chosen to question only one side of the market participants – supply, without delving on the issue of other two sides of market participants – demand and intermediaries.

Till there is demand, intermediaries will come up and supply will get created. It is not just YouTube that allows content creators i.e. supply side make money. Look at platforms like onlyfans. In 2024, onlyfans generated a gross revenue of US$ 6.3 bn from 210 mn subscribers out of which US$ 5.3 bn was payout to 2.2 mn content creators.

That is an average of 100 subscribers per content creator. The per employee revenue of onlyfans is US$ 31 mn, which is way more than Apple, Google, and Amazon! Imagine! So there exists a market that ensures such astronomically high numbers! Even intermediaries will keep getting created if there is a market and demand. From video parlours and corny mags in 1980s to digital platforms in this era of mobile internet, we have gone a long way in making this kind of content available easily. This has also made the supply side feel comfortable with this business because they are able to generate income sitting in the confines of their rooms.

Intermediaries have made it easy for supply side to access the market place with much required privacy and safety. So why question only the supply side. Ofcourse morality is an issue, which applies even to demand side and intermediaries and that too equally as supply side. But when the market is so big who looks at morality!

Ganda hai par dhandha hai yeh! And till there are tharki pajeets who are ready to pay, this market will thrive. Let girls who chose this earn money their way. Let others earn money the harder way. Also these girls come with a shelf life and expiry date. After a particular age the market value and demand falls. They need to earn more money more quickly before the sun sets. Its like making hay while the sun shines. Against that all others who chose a difficult path, have a career that keeps growing with age and experience. That’s a solace. Think about that!
