Roorkee, Uttarakhand: IIT Roorkee, in collaboration with SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth), successfully hosted an enchanting evening dedicated to the Gotipua dance, a traditional and revered dance form from Odisha. The event was held at the MAC Auditorium and witnessed a remarkable turnout, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for preserving and celebrating India’s rich cultural heritage.

The evening commenced with the traditional Deepshikha Lighting Ceremony, symbolizing an auspicious beginning. The ceremonial lamp was lit to invoke the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, setting a positive tone for the event.

The highlight of the event was the mesmerizing performance by the Gotipua dancers from the Dasabhuja Gotipua Odishi Nrutya Parisad, under the expert guidance of Guru Maguni Das. The young dancers, adorned in vibrant attire, captivated the audience with their intricate acrobatic figures and graceful movements, portraying scenes inspired by the divine love of Radha and Krishna. Their dedication to the art form was evident as they brought to life the rich traditions and cultural legacy of Odisha.

The performance was further enhanced by the soulful music provided by an ensemble of talented musicians, including Batakrishna Das on Mardala, Priyabrata Palai on Vocal and Harmonium, Chandan Sethi on Violin, DeenDayal Mohanta on Flute, and Bidyadhar Nayak on Majira. Together, they created an immersive experience that resonated deeply with the audience.

A special Q&A session followed the performance, allowing attendees to interact with the artists and gain deeper insights into the Gotipua dance form. The session provided a platform for meaningful exchange, enhancing the understanding and appreciation of this ancient art.

The event concluded with the presentation of mementos to the artists and distinguished guests, in recognition of their contribution to this cultural celebration. The audience left with a renewed sense of pride and a deeper connection to India’s diverse cultural heritage.

IIT Roorkee and CONCOR Forge Strategic Partnership to Revolutionize Logistics through Research and Innovation

Roorkee, Uttarakhand: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) have formalized a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance research and development in logistics and supply chain management. The MoU was signed by Prof. Akshay Dvivedi, Dean Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy on behalf of IIT Roorkee and Smt. Ritu Narang, Senior General Manager (MIS) on behalf of CONCOR. Prof. Amit Upadhyay, in the Department of Management Studies at IIT Roorkee, has a significant role in this collaboration and shall be actively involved in all related research work.

The collaboration between IIT Roorkee, a premier academic institution of national importance, and CONCOR, a leader in multimodal logistics services in India, aims to foster research, innovation, and capacity-building initiatives. The partnership is set to develop cutting-edge optimization models to enhance the efficiency of containerized freight movement across India’s extensive railway network, particularly focusing on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).

Under this MoU, IIT Roorkee will apply its academic and research prowess to conduct an in-depth Operations Research study. This study aims to optimize the loading of Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) on double-stack trains, ultimately reducing container rail haulage costs and improving inter-terminal movements through rail transhipment hubs. The collaboration will also involve developing an optimization-based decision support system for the efficient movement of container trains across CONCOR’s network.

Additionally, the MoU outlines several initiatives to foster industry-academia collaboration. CONCOR will provide internships for IIT Roorkee students, offering them hands-on experience with real-world logistics operations. Both parties will explore opportunities to establish jointly funded lab facilities and a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Roorkee, focusing on advanced research and development in logistics and supply chain management. Furthermore, the partnership will facilitate specialized courses, workshops, hackathons, and exhibitions, aimed at enhancing the skill sets of CONCOR employees and inspiring the next generation of logistics professionals.

The MoU will be effective for five years, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement. Both IIT Roorkee and CONCOR are committed to building a long-term relationship that will drive innovation, research, and development in India’s logistics and supply chain management.

The Foundation of Indian Historical and Cultural Research (FIHCR) Announces the Prestigious Sir Jadunath Sarkar Fellowship

The Sir Jadunath Sarkar Fellowship for Indian History is a key initiative of FIHCR, aimed at encouraging rigorous academic research across five distinct themes: Ancient Indian History, Medieval Indian History, Modern Indian History, the Freedom Movement, and Post-Independence Indian History

Bangalore/New Delhi : The Foundation for Indian Historical and Cultural Research (FIHCR), founded by eminent historian Dr. Vikram Sampath, proudly announces the launch of the Sir Jadunath Sarkar Fellowship for Indian History. The prestigious fellowship aims to nurture fresh scholarship on India’s diverse past. The Sir Jadunath Sarkar Fellowship for Indian History is a key initiative of FIHCR, aimed at encouraging rigorous academic research across five distinct themes: Ancient Indian History, Medieval Indian History, Modern Indian History, the Freedom Movement, and Post-Independence Indian History. Each year, through an open call for proposals, the Foundation will offer this prestigious fellowship to five to 10 deserving scholars. Ola Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Ola, has partnered with and supported the fellowship. This partnership underscores Ola’s commitment to preserving India’s cultural heritage and fostering academic excellence.

The fellowship – open to Indian nationals including those abroad – will offer an INR 15 lakh grant for producing a publish-worthy manuscript. Qualification criteria for the fellowship includes a graduate degree and proven research and writing skills among others. For the first batch of Sir Jadunath Sarkar Fellows, 19 shortlisted candidates went through a rigorous selection process, including interviews by an eminent jury panel. Consequently, Chandrachur Ghose, Shaan Kashyap, Dr. Saumya Dey, Arshia Malik, Nabaarun Barooah, Jasraj Singh Dhanju, Aarti Tikoo, and Dr. Lakshmi Arya have been selected for the fellowship. The awardees will receive assistance, mentoring, workshops, and funds to publish their manuscripts.

Roorkee, Uttarakhand – In a significant step towards bolstering climate-resilient agriculture, IIT Roorkee and the Odisha Integrated Irrigation Project for Climate-Resilient Agriculture (OIIPCRA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 8, 2023. The MoU, aimed at enhancing the skills of field engineers and officers in water resource management, was signed by Shri Rashmi Ranjan Nayak, Additional Secretary and Project Director of OIIPCRA, and Prof. Deepak Khare, Dean of Finance and Planning, BIS Chair Professor, Dept of WRD&M, IIT Roorkee. This initiative was supported by the Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary of Odisha, Mrs. Anu Garg, IAS.

The aim of the collaboration was to focus on equipping 160 engineers and officers from the Minor Irrigation Organization under the Department of Water Resources, Odisha, with cutting-edge knowledge in Water Resources Management, with a special emphasis on Minor Irrigation Systems.

As part of this effort, IIT Roorkee’s Department of Water Resources Development and Management (WRD&M), led by Prof. Khare, organized eight training programs between January 2024 and August 2024 at the Continuing Education Center, IIT Roorkee. The first course, held from January 8 to 13, 2024, was inaugurated by Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee. In these programs 160 Civil Engineers from Odisha participated in the training, gaining in-depth knowledge in various aspects of water resources management, including groundwater assessment, conjunctive use, groundwater governance, earth dam, canal design, canal lining, cross drainage works, water use efficiency, soil erosion, sedimentation, retrofitting of hydraulic structures, project management, economic risk assessment, rainwater harvesting, drought assessment, and cost-benefit analysis of irrigation projects.

In addition to foundational topics, participants were trained in advanced technologies such as Remote Sensing and GIS, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications in water resources, Decision Support System, advanced surveying techniques, and the impact of climate change on irrigation projects. Topics like carbon credits and their relevance to irrigation were also covered.

In the Valedictory Function last batch of the course (12-17 Aug 2024), Prof. K.K. Pant was the Chief Guest and Shri Rashmi Ranjan Nayak, Additional Secretary to Govt & Project Director, OIIPCRA, Odisha, was present as Guest of Honor. Prof. Thang Raj Chelliah Head WRDM and Prof. Kaushik Ghosh, Head CEC were also present at the occasion in addition to course coordinator Prof. Deepak Khare.

The courses featured lectures from distinguished professors across multiple IIT Roorkee departments in addition to Water Resources Development & Management, including Civil Engineering, Humanities, Management, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, as well as experts from the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, and the MNIT, Jaipur.
This collaborative effort is a crucial milestone in promoting sustainable water management practices, enhancing the efficiency of irrigation systems, and empowering engineers to address the challenges of climate-resilient agriculture in Odisha.
