Delhi: Atul Gangwar’s journey through Indian media has always been marked by quiet persistence and a deep love for storytelling rooted in language and culture. That journey reached a significant milestone when his documentary Main Nida was awarded Best Art and Culture Documentary at the 72nd National Film Awards. The film, a biographical portrait of the celebrated Urdu poet Padma Shri Nida Fazli, captures the essence of a literary voice that bridged worlds with simplicity and profundity. Its recognition at the national level is both a personal triumph and a validation of Gangwar’s long commitment to documenting India’s cultural heritage.
A Career Forged in Television and Literature
Gangwar entered the television industry more than two decades ago. His professional path began at B.A.G. Films under the guidance of Anuradha Prasad. There he directed several series, including Lens Eye, Hit Thi Hit Hai, and Birla Yamaha Hi-5. These early experiences taught him the craft of visual storytelling and the discipline of working within the fast-moving world of broadcast media.
For eleven years he served as a program producer at Sahara Samay Channel. During this period he handled a wide range of content, from film-based entertainment to news and current affairs. He produced and edited documentaries on varied subjects and created infotainment programs such as Adabi Cocktail and Urdu Bazar, both of which reflected his affinity for literature and language. On screen he became a familiar face as an anchor and presenter of election-based satirical shows. Programs like Tau ki Khari Khari, Shabda Baan, and Chunavi Chai Ki Chuski—the last co-hosted with the late Padma Shri Tom Alter—showcased his ability to blend sharp observation with warmth and humour.
Documentaries, Cinema, and a Lasting Cultural Legacy
Gangwar’s interest in cinema developed naturally from his television work. His story was adapted for the film Muawaza (Paisa Zameen Ka), starring Anupam Kher. He has written the story for Jalebi Culture, produced by Atul Pandey, and is developing the screenplay of Who Killed Deendayal Upadhyay for National Award-winning director Ujjwal Chatterjee. Parallel to these narrative projects, he has continued to produce documentaries. Main Nida was selected for the official section of the International Film Festival of India in Goa in 2024, won best documentary awards at the Rajasthan International Film Festival and the Jagran Film Festival, and earned official selection at the Mumbai International Film Festival 2026. Another of his works, Shat Shat Atal, a biographical documentary on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is available on the WAVES OTT platform. He is also co-producer of the feature film Dulhaniya Le Aayegi, scheduled for release in 2026.
Beyond production, Gangwar remains actively involved in the larger film community. He has served as a jury member for the non-feature film category at the 51st International Film Festival of India and the 66th National Film Awards. He is a member of the selection committee of the Mumbai International Film Festival and served on the jury of the 2nd Chitra Bharati Film Festival in 2018. Currently he is Festival Director of the Vardaan International Film Festival 2026 and holds the position of National Secretary of Bharatiya Chitra Sadhna. He also works as managing editor of the news portals Bol Bindaass and Bihar Update.com.
Through more than twenty years in the industry, Atul Gangwar has witnessed the transformation of Indian media while remaining anchored in literature, culture, and thoughtful storytelling.
