– Poland’s major revelation boosts India’s diplomatic stature; PM Modi cited as one of the few world leaders capable of influencing Putin.

Delhi : A significant statement from Poland amidst the Russia-Ukraine war has sparked a new discussion regarding India’s role in global diplomacy. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski claimed that had Prime Minister Narendra Modi not intervened in late 2022, Russia might have taken the drastic step of using tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

According to him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among the select few world leaders whose words Russian President Vladimir Putin takes seriously and whose advice carries weight with him. If this claim holds true, it highlights a pivotal role played by India in averting a potential nuclear crisis.

Poland’s major claim: Modi averted a nuclear crisis

Elaborating on this, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Bartoszewski explained that the Russia-Ukraine war had reached a critical and dangerous juncture in late 2022. At that time, there were persistent fears regarding Russia’s potential use of tactical nuclear weapons. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a crucial role in dissuading President Vladimir Putin from taking such a step by leveraging his personal influence and the decades-old strategic ties between India and Russia.

In his words, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of the few world leaders who can genuinely influence Putin. President Putin gives serious consideration to what Prime Minister Modi says.”

Modi among the few leaders with access to Putin

The Polish Deputy Foreign Minister noted that India and Russia share a relationship built on decades of trust. This partnership, which dates back to the Soviet era, remains robust between the two nations to this day. This is why Prime Minister Modi’s words resonate effectively with President Putin. It was also noted that if any country can exert genuine moral and political pressure on Russia to halt the war, India is among the most pivotal nations capable of doing so.

India Gains Support at the UN Security Council

During the press briefing, Poland openly supported India’s bid for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council. Furthermore, India’s balanced approach regarding the Middle East, particularly concerning Iran and the Gulf region, was commended. The Polish minister stated that just as India advocates for regional stability through dialogue, Poland also supports resolving all disputes, including those involving Iran, through diplomatic negotiations.

Today’s Era is Not an Era of War- A Global Message

One of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s most significant statements during the Russia-Ukraine conflict was made at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in September 2022. Prime Minister Modi explicitly told President Putin, “Today’s era is not an era of war.” This statement was received positively by the United States, Europe, and numerous Western nations. It was viewed as a reflection of India’s balanced, independent and peace-oriented foreign policy.

India Chooses the Path of Dialogue

It is noteworthy that the Russia-Ukraine war began on February 24, 2022, when Russia announced a “special military operation” in Ukraine and launched military actions from multiple directions. The conflict has continued unabated since then. Millions of people have been displaced, thousands of soldiers and civilians have lost their lives, and Europe’s security architecture has been profoundly impacted. Throughout this conflict, India neither openly sided with any party nor joined any military alliance. India consistently reiterated that a lasting solution to any dispute is possible only through dialogue and diplomacy, not on the battlefield.

Maintaining Ties with Both Russia and Ukraine

A key feature of India’s foreign policy has been its ability to maintain a dialogue with both Russia and Ukraine. While India upheld its traditional strategic ties with Russia, it simultaneously maintained continuous high-level contact with Ukraine. In 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a historic visit to Kyiv and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During the visit, he clearly stated that war is not the solution to any problem and affirmed that India stands firmly for peace, dialogue, and humanity.

Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy also held detailed discussions recently during the G-7 summit. The two leaders deliberated on bilateral cooperation, trade impacted by the conflict and the strengthening of future ties. Prime Minister Modi reiterated that India would continue to accord the highest priority to peace and humanity under all circumstances.

India’s Growing Global Acceptance

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has elevated India’s role in international politics to a new level. India is a traditional strategic partner of Russia, yet its relations with Western nations have also steadily strengthened. This balance establishes India as a nation that believes in the politics of finding solutions rather than conflict. The statement by Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister is also seen as an indication of this growing global acceptance of India. Indeed, among the few world leaders capable of influencing President Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands out as a prominent figure.
